The September 2010 Olde Towne East Neighborhood Association General membership meeting will be held Wednesday, September  8, 2010 starting at 7:00 p.m. located at OTENA office/meeting room 734 Oak Street Columbus, Ohio 43205.  (formally the Columbus Music Hall)

Dear Holiday Tour Patrons,

We regret to inform you that the association will need to cancel this year’s Holiday Tour of Homes which was to be held December 2010.

After consulting with Trustees and former tour committee chairs, the Trustees voted to cancel the tour because of the overwhelming
lack of interest among the general membership in organizing the tour.

THIS IS THE OLDE TOWNE EAST OUTDOOR WALKING TOUR.  WE WILL NOT BE ENTERING HOUSES

“Bankers, Brewers and Basketball Players” tour will be on July 24, 10a-12p. Tour starts at East Broad and North Monroe (east side of Broad St Presbyterian Church). Ticket prices are $8/10, OTENA member/nonmember. The book “Historic Homes of Olde Towne” by Lea Ann Sterling, will be on sale for $5.  

Bankers, Brewers and Basketball Players

North of Broad Street flourished in the 1880s as Columbus’ wealthy moved from Goodale Park and other elite neighborhoods to this new suburb. Monroe Street housed musicians, such as Louis Armstrong, and basketball teams who performed at the Lincoln Theater during the early-mid twentieth century. Local bank founders and presidents—one who turned artist—lived on these streets over the decades; including William Hardesty, president of State Savings Bank. Famous Columbus brewmaster, Louis Hoster (Hoster Brewery) owned a home on Hamilton, nestled between bankers and significant Columbus political and business leaders. Step back in time on these streets of Hamilton Park and Sycamore-tree lined Monroe, both graced with elegant and historically significant architecture.

A Day in the Life in Olde Towne East

On this south of Broad Street tour, hear about the only woman to win the Miss America title twice (from OTE!) and stories of those who produced brick pavers, created electric street designs, and even about the start of the OSU marching band salute–thanks to OTE’s own, Tubby! See architectural elements of houses and buildings like none other in Columbus! Predominantly residential, this tour of OTE highlights the architectural elements and significance of a well-known, historic neighborhood.
